Ashland Leaps To 25th In First Winter Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings

Thanks to most of the results from a first in Ashland University athletics history, the AU athletic program has jumped to 25th in the initial 2015-16 winter Learfield Directors' Cup standings.

For the first time in AU history, all of its winter sports programs – women's basketball, men's basketball, wrestling, swimming and indoor track and field – competed in the NCAA postseason at the same time. AU athletics has moved up from a tie for 138th at the end of the fall season to the Top 25 after wrestling, swimming and men's and women's indoor track and field points have been factored in.

The next Division II Learfield Directors' Cup standings will be released on March 31, at the conclusion of the men's and women's basketball postseason.

Ashland received 67½ Cup points for a 10th-place nationals finish by men's indoor track and field, 61½ points for a 14th-place showing by wrestling, 43 points from women's indoor track and field (30th place) and 36 points from swimming senior Hannah Mattar alone for her finish in three events at nationals.

Before the remainder of the winter is factored in, Ashland has the seventh-most winter-season points (208) in Division II.

The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports in Division II – seven men's and seven women's.
