Eagle Quartet In 2016 Ashland County Sports Hall Class

Four Ashland College/University athletics standouts, including current AU head baseball coach John Schaly and recently retired AU head women's tennis coach Carl Leedy, are a part of the 2016 Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame class.

Joining Schaly and Leedy as the latest members of the ACSHOF are Gil Dodds (cross country/track and field) and Duane Yoder (football).

- Dodds was one of the early stars of Ashland College athletics. In cross country, he won a national championship in 1940 by covering a four-mile course in 20:30.2, and was an All-American in both 1939 and 1940. Dodds also was a two-time track and field All-American (1940 and 1941) in the two-mile run.

- Leedy retired this spring following a 15-year run guiding the Eagle women's tennis team – and a 50-year coaching career overall. He sported a 175-154 record at Ashland, and his decade-and-a-half tenure also included seven Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament appearances and three NCAA Tournament berths (2008-10). Leedy led AU to its first winning season in 2007-08 (22-6).

- Schaly will enter his 20th season leading the AU baseball team in 2017. He is the all-time winningest head coach in Eagle baseball history with 706 victories, and has the program's best winning percentage (.664) among the four coaches who have logged at least 300 games. Schaly has been named regional Coach of the Year four times and GLIAC Coach of the Year six times, has won five GLIAC championships and made the NCAA Division II postseason 14 times.

- Yoder was a starting halfback on the undefeated "Hungry Hounds" Ashland College team of 1954 – a 7-0 squad which outscored its opponents 119-28. He led the Eagles in receiving yards, ran 60 times for 323 yards and scored six touchdowns during the 1955 season.

The 2016 Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame class will be inducted on Oct. 15 at the John C. Myers Convocation Center on the Ashland University campus.
