Once again, with the entire world watching, former Ashland University football and track standout Carlin Isles put on show.
The United States Rugby Sevens team finished in ninth place in the inaugural Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, following a 24-12 win over Spain on Thursday (Aug. 11) afternoon. Isles, deemed the fastest man in rugby, scored two tries for 10 points to lead the Americans to victory.
Team USA went 3-2 in the tournament, and Isles led the way with 30 points (six tries). The Americans were 3-0 when Isles scored at least one try, and 0-2 when he didn't.
While at Ashland, Isles was a four-time track All-American – two indoors and two outdoors. He continues to boast the school record in the indoor 60-meter run (6.68 seconds), and was the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Indoor and Outdoor Men's Freshman of the Meet in 2009. On the football field, Isles has the AU record for longest touchdown play (100-yard kickoff return) and most single-game kickoff-return yards (174).
