Ashland University junior tight end Adam Shaheen (football) and senior outside hitter Alli Cudworth (volleyball) each have earned 2016 fall Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner's Awards, the conference announced on Friday (Feb. 17) morning.

Shaheen, who has forgone his senior season at Ashland to declare for the 2017 National Football League Draft, set a new NCAA Division II single-record record for touchdown catches by a tight end in 2016 with 16. He caught 57 passes for 867 yards as a junior.

His successful junior campaign has led to various offseason awards – first-team American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), NCAA Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) and D2Football.com first-team All-America; D2CCA and Don Hansen first-team All-Super Region 4, College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) first-team Academic All-America, CoSIDA first-team Academic All-District, All-GLIAC first-team and a Harlon Hill Trophy (D-II Player of the Year) nomination.

On Oct. 10, 2016, Shaheen was the first tight end in GLIAC history to win the conference's Offensive Player of the Week award. He has a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average in Business Administration.

Cudworth became Ashland volleyball's first-ever four-time first-team All-GLIAC performer and its first two-time Academic All-America in 2016 after collecting 488 kills, 57 service aces, 393 digs and 64 total blocks.

Among Cudworth's other senior-season honors are American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II honorable mention All-American, and first-team All-Midwest Region honors from both the D2CCA and the AVCA.

Cudworth also became the third player in program history to have 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs this fall. An Integrated Social Studies Education major, Cudworth sports a 3.87 cumulative grade-point average.

Ashland's athletic program has earned 32 GLIAC Commissioner's Awards since the fall of 2007.

The GLIAC Commissioner's Awards are presented after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play. All GPAs are based on a 4.0 scale.
