LINK – 2016-17 LEARFIELD DIRECTORS' CUP STANDINGS
Ashland University's athletic program ended the 2016-17 season 34th in the annual NCAA Division II Learfield Directors' Cup standings, as announced on Thursday (June 8) morning.
Two-hundred and sixty eight Division II programs were ranked in the final 2016-17 standings.
In 2016-17, Ashland's women's basketball team won the Division II national championship, the Eagle men's track and field teams finished second (indoor) and tied for third (outdoor) in the country, and the AU wrestling team took sixth at nationals.
In addition, there were four individual national championships won in Eagle Nation in 2016-17 – by 133-pound senior wrestler Michael Labry, sophomore Myles Pringle in the men's 400-meter dash both indoors and outdoors and junior Daniel Roberts in the men's hammer throw outdoors.
This past athletic year, 10 Ashland teams competed in the NCAA Division II postseason. Those Eagle squads combined for 423 Directors' Cup points, including 263.5 in the winter, eighth-most in the country.
For the 12th consecutive season, Ashland's athletic department finished second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Presidents' Trophy (all-sports) standings, and the Eagle women's basketball and men's outdoor track and field teams each won GLIAC championships.
Also in 2016-17 (awards season hasn't concluded), Ashland student-athletes have earned seven College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America awards and four GLIAC Commissioner's Awards, and 27 Eagles earned at least one All-American honor on the fields of competition.
