Ashland University began its fourth decade of naming Student-Athletes of the Year with the announcement on Tuesday (May 15) afternoon of the 2017-18 honorees – senior forward Andi Daugherty (women's basketball), and senior center Dominic Giunta and senior wide receiver Matthew Wilcox (football).

In 2017-18, Daugherty averaged 14.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game, while shooting 55.1 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from 3-point range and 88.3 percent from the free-throw line. Also as a senior, she became the first Ashland College/University student-athlete to earn three College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American awards, the first player in Eagle women's basketball history be a four-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Defensive Team selection, and one of only two AU women's hoops players to be named All-GLIAC four times.

Daugherty, also a 2017-18 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) honorable mention All-American, graduated with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.95 as a Finance major.

In 2017, Giunta was the anchor of an Eagle offensive line which allowed Ashland to average 33.4 points and 407.8 yards of offense per game in 2017. This past season, he graded out at 88 percent blocking with 108 knockdowns. Giunta's senior-season honors include first-team Associated Press and Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) first-team All-America, D2CCA NCAA Division II All-Super Region Three first team, GLIAC Offensive Lineman of the Year and first-team All-GLIAC.

Giunta graduated in December with a cumulative GPA of 3.70 as a Physics/Mathematics double major.

As a senior, Wilcox, despite a late-season injury, led the Eagles in 2017 with 707 receiving yards, and was second on the team in both receptions (37) and receiving touchdowns (five). Off the field, Wilcox earned second-team Division II CoSIDA Academic All-American and first-team All-GLIAC laurels.

Also in 2017, Wilcox became the second AU football player to be named the recipient of the GLIAC's Jack H. McAvoy Award, presented annually to the GLIAC football player who best combines outstanding character and leadership on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

Wilcox graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.78 as an Exercise Science major.

Daugherty and Giunta also were GLIAC Commissioner's Award recipients during the 2017-18 school year.

The Ashland University Student-Athlete of the Year award is a faculty honor, voted on by the Athletic Committee.
