Ashland University has earned its way back into the top 10 among NCAA Division II athletic departments, finishing ninth in the 2018-19 Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup standings, released on Wednesday (June 12) morning.
The Eagle baseball team's tied-for-fifth-place finish at the Division II College World Series added 78 points to Ashland's total, leaving the athletic department with a final tally of 583.50 points – which is third-best among D-II private schools.
Ashland has earned its 10th top-10 finish in Division II since the Directors' Cup began in 1995-96. This is the first time AU has finished in the top 10 in the country since placing second in 2014-15. That year was the end of an eight-year run of top-10 finishes in Division II.
Thanks to a men's outdoor track and field national championship, baseball's finish and the 10th-place showing at nationals for the women's outdoor track and field squad, Ashland ended the spring with 245.50 Directors' Cup points.
During the 2018-19 athletic year, 14 Ashland teams had representation in the Division II postseason, and 11 scored Directors' Cup points.
In all, 268 Division II athletic programs earned Directors' Cup points in 2018-19.
The Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
