Joseph Lewis is in his second year as the Director of Bands at Ashland University, where he directs the AU Eagle Marching Band and is the principle conductor of the AU Symphonic Band.

Lewis received his bachelor’s degrees in Music Education and Music Performance (Bass Trombone) in 2006 from The Ohio State University, and his master’s degree in Music Education with emphasis in Wind Conducting from Bowling Green State University in 2015.

Prior to his appointment at Ashland University, Lewis was the Director of Bands at Northeastern Local Schools in Defiance, Ohio.

Lewis also is a Chief Warrant Officer in the Ohio Army National Guard and the Commander of the 122nd Ohio Army National Guard Band in Columbus, Ohio. He has been a member of the 122nd Army Band since 2000, and commanding since 2015. Other conducting opportunities include the Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductors Association (OPCICA) Honors Band, the Ashland Area Junior High School Honor Band, and various clinic opportunities throughout the State of Ohio.

Lewis' performing experience includes playing bass trombone with The O’Jays, The Temptations, The Toledo Jazz Orchestra, The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra, The Rick Brunetto Big Band, and The Joey Thomas Big Band.
