Chargers Quiet Eagles, 9-2

The Hillsdale Chargers were a thrifty bunch on Saturday (Apr. 5), holding the Ashland University Ealges to two runs and seven hits in the opener of a three-game GLIAC baseball series. The Chargers downed the Eagles, 9-2.

The second game of Saturday's twinbill was suspended in the eighth inning with the teams tied, 3-3. That game will be resumed on Sunday (Apr. 6) when the teams will also play a nine-inning game.

The Eagles (13-11/3-6 GLIAC) were looking to build some momentum. AU had won two of three games against Lake Erie earlier this week.

Hillsdale (9-18/7-6) led, 4-0 after two innings. The Chargers were in front, 5-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. A four-run outburst gave the Chargers plenty of room to work with entering the seventh inning.

Matthew Reck pitched the first 5.1 innings to get the win. He's 3-2. Reck limited the Eagles to seven hits. The only AU hitter to have much luck against Reck was right fielder Nick Edwards. He went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Vince Frate (5-2) suffered his second loss of the year. Frate went five innings and gave up five runs - four earned. The Chargers got nine hits off of Frate. The right-hander walked four and struck out three.

Designated hitter Tad Sobieszczanski went 2-for-3 with three RBI for Hillsdale. Center fielder Luke Ortel was 2-for-5.
