The Ashland University baseball team lost to Saginaw Valley State, 14-6 on Saturday (May 3) in a nine-inning GLIAC game at SVSU.
Originally, the Eagles and Cardinals were scheduled to play a doubleheader. Rain altered that plan. The teams will close out the regular season with two games on Sunday (May 4).
Ashland is 23-18 and 13-13 in the GLIAC. SVSU is 18-22 and 15-15 in the league. The jostling for spots in the GLIAC Tournament will continue through Sunday. Right now, Tifin is fourth with a 16-14 conference record. Ashland is fifth and SVSU is sixth. The top six teams qualify for the conference tournament, which will be played next week. Ohio Dominican is in seventh place but is out of the running for the postseason with a 14-17 record.
On Saturday, AU led, 3-2 after one inning and 4-3 after two frames. The Cardinals broke open the game with a seven-run third inning. The Eagles could never recover from that.
SVSU had 15 hits. Richard Guglielmi was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI. Kyle Kaufmann was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs and Tyler Schwanz was 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI.
The Eagles didn't have a shortage of hits. Designated hitter Kyle Brooks was 2-for-5 with a double, homer and two RBI. Second baseman Wade Kaido, shortstop Austin Walts, left fielder Mackenzie Hampshire and third baseman Mike Lewandowski had two hits apiece. Kaido doubled.
Vince Frate (8-5) took the loss. He pitched 2.1 innings and was roughed up for nine runs (five earned) on eight hits. The Eagles used three pitchers.
Andrew Geese (5-3) worked the first seven innings and received credit for the win. He allowed five runs on 11 hits.
