AU Bows Out Of GLIAC Tourney

The Ashland University baseball team was eliminated from the GLIAC Tournament on Friday (May 9) thanks to a 9-4 loss to Wayne State. The loss leaves AU with a 24-21 record.

The Eagles encountered trouble early on against the Warriors. WSU (34-14) scored once in the first inning and scored two runs apiece in the second, third and fourth innings to lead, 7-0 after four innings.

Much of AU's offense was provided by outfielder Alex Sortwell. He belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning and a solo homer in the eighth.

Shortstop Austin Walts was 2-for-4 with a double and outfielder Nick Edwards was 2-for-4.

WSU pitcher Kyle Zimmerman hurt the Eagles in several ways. He pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits. Zimmerman (6-2) walked two and struck out 10. The Wayne State hurler also went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI.

Shortstop Jeremy Carroll was 3-for-4 for the Warriors and Eric Cunningham tripled.

The Eagles used four pitchers. Alex Smith (7-5) started and took the loss. He worked 2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Vince Frate, Mitch Cox and David Devine also pitched.

Ashland was the seventh seed in the tournament. Wayne State is seeded second.
