Eagles Sweep Gannon Doubleheader, Now 7-3

Ashland University's baseball team swept both ends of a doubleheader on Friday (March 6) against Gannon in Lakeland, Fla., 4-3 and 6-0, to improve to 7-3 on its annual spring trip.

In Game 1, the Eagles rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win on senior Kyle Brooks' RBI single in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman Sean Pfeifer's RBI single tied the game at 3.

Brooks was 2-for-3 with an RBI, senior Stephen James was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI and junior Mackenzie Hampshire also drove in a run. Ashland was facing Gannon pitcher Aaron Cox, who hadn't allowed a run in 2015 prior to Friday.

Junior Jake Baldwin got the win in the opener, going 5 1/3 innings and striking out six. He allowed four hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks. Junior Alex Smith got the save after striking out four in 1 2/3 innings.

In the nightcap, junior Art Warren had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings, and ended with a one-hitter, four walks and 10 strikeouts in six frames. Freshman Derek Baker pitched the scoreless seventh.

Hampshire was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, sophomore Steve Mowry was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and junior Mike Lewandowski was 3-for-3 in AU's 11-hit attack.

The Eagles will continue Florida play on Saturday (March 7) at 12:30 p.m. against 15th-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato.
