GLIAC-Leading Eagles Finish Four-Game Sweep Of Dragons

It was a little later than originally scheduled, but Ashland University's baseball team finished off a second consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference four-game sweep on Monday (April 6) afternoon.

The Eagles defeated Tiffin, 12-6, at Donges Field on Monday on the strength of a six-run bottom of the seventh inning. Ashland sports the best overall record in the GLIAC (21-7), the top conference record (10-2) and leads the GLIAC South Division at 8-0.

The Dragons are 11-18/5-7/2-6.

Monday's game was rescheduled from Game 2 on Friday (April 3), which was postponed due to rain.

With the score tied at 4 after 6½ innings, Ashland scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by junior third baseman Blake Bellman. The Eagles went on for a six-spot in the seventh and two more runs in the eighth.

Bellman was 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored for AU, sophomore right fielder Joey Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored and senior left fielder Kyle Brooks added a 2-for-4 effort with three RBIs and a run scored.

Senior second baseman Stephen James, who came into the day leading the GLIAC in all three triple crown categories (batting average, home runs and RBIs), was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, and finished the four-game series going 10-for-15 with six doubles, two home runs, 10 runs scored and 11 RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Mitch Cox improved to 3-1 and earned his second relief win in eight days with 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
