Eagle Baseball Takes Two Losses At SVSU

Ashland University's baseball team's 10-game winning streak was snapped on Sunday (April 12), as the Eagles lost both ends of a doubleheader, 4-0 and 13-7, at Saginaw Valley State.

AU is a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-leading 23-9 overall, and 12-4 in the conference (second to Northwood, 14-4). The Cardinals are 12-14, 7-11.

The Eagles were limited to three hits in Game 1. Sophomore pitcher Brandyn Sittinger struck out eight, walked one and allowed seven hits and four runs in six innings.

The opener marked the first time Ashland was shutout since a 5-0 loss at SVSU on May 4, 2014.

In Game 2, AU had a 2-1 lead after 4½ innings before the Cardinals put up a seven-spot in the bottom of the fifth. Senior second baseman Stephen James was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs, and sophomore designated hitter Steve Mowry and junior first baseman Mike Lewandowski each had three of the Eagles' 13 hits.

The Eagles, ranked No. 21 in the country and leading the GLIAC South Division (8-0), will return home for six games in a five-day span, playing host to Lake Erie on Wednesday (April 15) and Walsh on Saturday (April 18) and Sunday (April 19).
