Eagles Lose To ’Toppers For Second Time In Two Weeks

On March 30, Ashland University's baseball team lost at home to West Liberty, 9-8.

The Hilltoppers weren't hospitable hosts in turn on Wednesday (April 6), as the Eagles lost another non-conference nine-inning game, 7-3.

Ashland is 14-11, while West Liberty is 18-9.

The game was tied at 1 through two innings, then the Eagles scored twice in the top of the third inning on RBI singles by sophomore left fielder J.P. Sorma and junior right fielder Eric Hansman.

Starting his first game of 2016 after 10 relief appearances, junior left-handed pitcher Mike Gentile more than held his own. He allowed three hits, one run (unearned) and one walk while striking out five, and lowered his season earned-run average to 2.14.

West Liberty, however, scored five runs (three earned) off junior right-hander Cory Teachout (1-3) in the bottom of the sixth. The Hilltoppers added a run in the eighth off freshman righty Chris Slavik.

Sophomore catcher Ryan Lowe was 2-for-4 in Ashland's seven-hit attack.

The Eagles (14-11/5-1/4-0), looking to turn around a skid of three losses in the last four games, will return to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday (April 9) and Sunday (April 10) for a four-game set at Tiffin (11-15/2-6/1-3).
