Baseball Wins Second Straight At Tiffin, 3-1

It came four days later, but the baseball teams from Ashland University and Tiffin played Game 2 of their 2016 four-game series on Tuesday (April 12).

After a 4-1 AU win on the road on Friday (April 8), the Eagles and Dragons resumed their series in Tiffin on Tuesday after a couple weather-related hiccups – with Ashland coming out on top again, 3-1.

Ashland improves to 16-11 overall, 7-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 6-0 in the GLIAC South Division. Tiffin is 11-17/2-8/1-5.

The Dragons broke the scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the third inning, and it remained a 1-0 game until the top of the sixth. Ashland tied the game at 1 on an RBI single by senior first baseman Mackenzie Hampshire.

The Eagles then took the lead for good with two runs in the seventh on back-to-back RBIs from senior second baseman Mike Lewandowski (single) and junior designated hitter Lance Myers (groundout).

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Derek Baker improved to 3-3 after allowing six hits, a run and no walks and striking out four in 7 1/3 innings. Junior lefty Mike Gentile tossed 1 1/3 scoreless frames, then senior closer Alex Smith got the final out for his fifth save of the season.

Lewandowski, sophomore third baseman J.P. Sorma and junior shortstop Brad Hartman each had two of AU's eight hits.

The Eagles will continue GLIAC play with a doubleheader at Donges Field on Wednesday (April 13) at 2 p.m. against Lake Erie.
