Eagles Fall In Series Finale, Senior Day Vs. Pioneers

Ashland University's baseball team lost the fourth and final game of its home series against Malone on Sunday (May 1), 12-3, on Senior Day at Donges Field.

The Eagles, who have clinched the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division title for a second consecutive season, as well as a spot in the 2016 GLIAC Tournament, are 28-15 overall, 19-5 in the conference and 15-3 in the division. They took the first three games of the series on Friday (April 29) and Saturday (April 30).

The Pioneers are 24-20/16-10/13-7.

Malone set the tone early with four runs in the top of the first inning. Ashland struck for a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by senior right fielder Mike Lewandowski, then two more in the fourth on a two-run home run by senior first baseman Mackenzie Hampshire for a 4-3 deficit.

The Pioneers, however, put up crooked numbers in the fifth (three runs) and seventh (four) innings, and added another run in the eighth.

Hampshire finished a big weekend by going 2-for-4 with the homer and two RBIs. The loss went to freshman right-hander Chris Slavik (3-2), who allowed five hits, four runs and a walk in a third of an inning.

The Eagles return to the field for the start of a six-game road trip to finish the regular season on Tuesday (May 3) at 2 p.m. at Tiffin.
