In the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Tuesday (Feb. 7) afternoon, Ashland University's baseball team was picked to finish third in the 11-team league.

The Eagles finished with 81 voting points and three first-place votes. Grand Valley State was chosen to win the GLIAC with 94 points and seven first-place votes, followed by Wayne State (85 points, one first-place vote).

Ashland was 33-22 overall and 22-8 in the GLIAC in 2016, sharing the conference's regular-season title with the Lakers. Last year, the Eagles reached the NCAA Division II postseason for the second season in a row and fourth time this decade.

The 2017 Eagles will feature junior second baseman/shortstop/outfielder J.P. Sorma and senior third baseman/first baseman Lance Myers, each of whom earned Midwest Region Pre-Season All-American status from College Baseball Newspaper. Sorma hit .381 with 17 home runs, 11 doubles, 51 runs scored, 59 RBIs and a .695 slugging percentage in 2016. Myers was a .345 hitter a spring ago with 43 runs scored, 15 doubles, two home runs, 39 RBIs and a .452 slugging percentage.
