Eagles Split Opening-Day Twinbill In Nashville

Opening the 2017 season on Saturday (Feb. 25) with a doubleheader against Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville, Tenn., Ashland University's baseball team lost 6-3 and won 5-2.

The Eagle victory saw them overcome a 1-0 deficit after three innings with a four-spot in the fourth. Freshman third baseman Evan Lee walked with the bases loaded, then freshman catcher Alex Laikos followed with a sacrifice fly. Senior shortstop Brad Hartman and senior designated hitter Lance Myers finished the half-inning with RBI singles.

Ashland's scoring concluded with a run in the top of the fifth on a single by junior right fielder Connor Barleben.

Junior left-hander Derek Baker earned the win in relief, going the final four innings and allowing just three hits, an unearned run and no walks while striking out three. Baker came in for junior right-hander Pat Carlozzi, who gave up four hits, a run and two walks and whiffed four in the first three frames.

In the opener, Hartman and Lee each rapped two of Ashland's eight hits, with RBIs being collected by junior left fielder Greg Ludwig, junior second baseman J.P. Sorma and Lee.

The loss went to senior lefty Mike Gentile, who allowed seven hits, four runs and three walks and struck out three in 4 1/3 innings.
