Baseball Falls To Mary, 10-4, As Spring Trip Continues

On the latest leg of its annual Florida trip, Ashland University's baseball team lost to Mary, 10-4, on Monday (Feb. 6) afternoon.

Both teams are 3-5.

Freshman left fielder Vince Vanata went 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring one. Junior right fielder Connor Barleben and sophomore catcher Jacob Garbarino each went 2-for-5, while freshman center fielder Mac Schoenman was 2-for-2.

Junior second baseman J.P. Sorma hit a pair of sacrifice flies.

Junior right-hander Luke Smith took the loss despite striking out eight in 6 1/3 innings. Smith allowed seven hits, six runs (four earned) and no walks.

Ashland had a 4-0 lead after two innings before Mary turned in crooked numbers in the top of the third (two runs), fifth (two), seventh (two) and ninth (three).

For Mary, Andrew Beyer and Jaxon Ford each had three of its 14 hits, and Ford drove in four runs. Travis Stevens threw seven shutout innings in relief to earn the victory.

UP NEXT: Tuesday (March 7) at 2:30 p.m. vs. Minnesota Duluth.
