AU Baseball Tops West Chester With Six-Run Fifth

Playing its next-to-last Florida trip contest, Ashland University's baseball team used a six-run fifth inning to defeat West Chester on Saturday (March 11), 8-5.

The Eagles improve to 5-8, while the Golden Rams are 3-2.

Ashland's big hit in the fifth inning was a three-run home run by freshman first baseman Carson Mittermaier.

Junior second baseman J.P. Sorma was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, freshman outfielder Vince Vanata was 3-for-5 and senior outfielder Carsten Dembeck had two hits and scored two runs.

Junior right-hander Luke Smith earned the victory by going seven innings, striking out six and allowing five hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks. Sophomore righty Ryan Curtis picked up the save by getting the game's last four outs.

UP NEXT: The last Florida game of the trip on Sunday (March 12) at 1 p.m. vs. Northwood.
