Continuing Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play in Detroit, Mich., on Saturday (April 8), Ashland University's baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader with Wayne State, 2-0 and 6-5.
In the opener, the Eagles (12-18 overall, 5-9 GLIAC) surrendered just single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. Senior left-handed pitcher Mike Gentile (3-6) allowed six hits, two runs and three walks and struck out seven in his fourth complete game of 2017.
Ashland's offense mustered just two hits in Game 1, singles by freshman designated hitter Carson Mittermaier and sophomore left fielder Ivan Wortman.
The second game saw the Warriors (18-9, 8-2) take leads of 1-0 after one inning and 4-1 after two before the Eagles came back. In the top of the third, Ashland cut its deficit to 4-3 thanks to senior center fielder Carsten Dembeck's second home run of the season.
Then, in the top of the fifth, AU knotted the game at 4 when freshman pinch-hitter Evan Lee singled to score senior third baseman J.P. Sorma.
Wayne State, however, scored what would be the eventual game-winning runs in the bottom of the fifth on a home run by Brad Baldwin and an RBI double by Griffin Harms.
Dembeck was 3-for-5 with the homer, and Sorma was 3-for-4. Lee stayed in the game and went 2-for-3.
Sophomore right-hander Sam Rice (2-3) took the loss, yielding 10 hits, six runs and two walks and striking out one in four innings. Junior southpaw Derek Baker kept Ashland in the game with four scoreless innings of relief.
