Finishing a four-game Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference road set against Wayne State on Sunday (April 9), Ashland University's baseball team lost 7-5 and 6-3 decisions to the Warriors in Detroit, Mich.

In Game 1 on Sunday, the Eagles spotted Wayne State two runs in each of the first two innings, en route to a 5-0 deficit going into the fifth. In the top of the fifth, Ashland scored three times to drop the Warriors' lead to two, as senior shortstop Brad Hartman had a two-run single and junior second baseman J.P. Sorma followed with a run-scoring double.

Wayne State, however, countered with a two-spot in the bottom of the fifth to stretch its lead to four runs. The Eagles scored two more in the top of the seventh on a Sorma home run, but the Warriors held on for the win.

Sorma was 2-for-3 with the double, homer and three RBIs, while Hartman was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Junior right-hander Luke Smith (2-3) took the loss, allowing seven hits and five runs and striking out three in three innings.

The nightcap saw the Eagles take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Jacob Garbarino. Wayne State, however, matched that in the bottom of the second, then scored four runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Ashland posted the game's final two runs in the seventh (RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Tyler Seymour) and eighth (RBI groundout by senior third baseman Lance Myers) innings.

Of the Eagles' 10 hits, two each were collected by freshman left fielder Vince Vanata, Seymour, Sorma and junior right fielder Connor Barleben. Sophomore righty Chris Slavik (2-2) yielded five hits, six runs and four walks and struck out one in 4 1/3 frames.

Going back to March 25 at home against Hillsdale, Ashland's last seven losses have been by a total of 15 runs.
