Ashland University baseball split with Tiffin on Sunday (April 23) at Heminger Field.

AU (14-29 overall, 7-20 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) won Game 1, 9-3, and lost Game 2 against the Dragons (23-18, 15-9), 7-5.

The Eagles snapped a six-game losing streak with the Game 1 victory, during which they turned four double plays.

Freshman Vince Vanata, senior Carsten Dembeck and junior J.P. Sorma recorded three hits each as the No. 1, 2 and 3 hitters in the lineup.

Ashland hit five doubles for the third time this season and the first time since April 1 in the win. Vanata, Sorma, senior Brad Hartman and freshmen Alex Laikos and Mac Schoenman all doubled.

Ashland scored in five of the seven innings en route to its first game with nine-plus runs since it plated 19 against Walsh on April 2. Laikos led AU with three RBIs.

It also was AU's third 16-plus hit performance of the season and first since March 24.

Sophomore Chris Slavik earned the victory on the mound, moving into second on the team with three wins this season.

The Eagles made a late push in Game 2, trailing, 7-2, heading into the top of the eighth inning.

One of freshman Logan Stoldt's three singles in the game scored two in the eighth, and Laikos reached on a throwing error that allowed Vanata to score in the ninth.

Vanata added three hits and a double again in Game 2.

Ashland ultimately outhit Tiffin, 11-9, but nine errors cost the Eagles in the end.

Juniors Pat Carlozzi (five innings) and Luke Smith (three) allowed just one earned run for Ashland.

UP NEXT: The Eagles will play their final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday (April 26), as they welcome Cedarville for a single game beginning at 3 p.m.
