Winning Streak Stopped As Cavaliers Top Eagles

The Ashland University baseball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Friday (March 9) as the Eagles lost to Walsh, 11-7, on the penultimate day of the Russ Matt Invitational in central Florida.

The Eagles (7-3) lost for the first time in the Sunshine State despite having a 1-0 lead through five innings as junior Devin Peters gave up just one hit – a leadoff single in the first – going into the sixth.

Ashland opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as freshman Austin Eifrid was hit by a pitch to start the game and scored on a one-out double by senior Greg Ludwig.

Walsh (6-5) took its first lead of the game in the sixth inning, scoring seven runs on six hits to take a 7-1 lead.

Freshman Micah Allen roped a three-run double in the bottom of the sixth to cut into the margin at 7-4, but the Cavaliers got those runs back in the eighth.

The Eagles took advantage of two walks and two hit batters to plate three runs in the eighth inning to make it 10-7, but they could not add on in the ninth.

Walsh out-hit the Eagles, 12-5, in the game.

Peters suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Allen drove in four runs, going 1-for-3 with a double to lead the offense. Ludwig and junior Matt Littrell each scored two runs.

The Eagles will conclude their Florida trip on Saturday (March 10) with a 1 p.m. game against Notre Dame in Winter Haven.
