AU Bats Silenced By Davenport In Friday Twinbill

Davenport pitcher Grant Wolfram threw a no-hitter in Game 1 and the Ashland University baseball team was not able to get its offense on track in the finale as the Panthers took both ends of a doubleheader, 6-0 and 7-2, on Friday (April 27) afternoon in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Wolfram (5-3) struck out 13 batters and retired the final 13 batters he faced in Game 1 to finish off his no-hitter. A first-inning walk by junior Matt Littrell and a hit-by-pitch by junior Alex Niecikowski in the fourth were the only baserunners allowed by Wolfram.

The Panthers (25-17, 15-8 GLIAC) scored two runs on RBI hits by Zac Wilson and Jacob Buchberger in the first inning and tacked on four more in the third.

Junior right-hander Devin Peters (6-5) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on 12 hits in a six-inning complete game. He walked two and struck out four.

In Game 2, Austin Petravicius hit a solo home run to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

A second-inning double by sophomore Vince Vanata was the only hit for the Eagles until a two-run rally in the seventh, but by that point the Panthers held a 7-0 lead.

Singles by senior Greg Ludwig and Vanata put runners on the corners before sophomore Michael Rogers ripped a two-run double to the gap.

The Eagles (26-16, 13-10 GLIAC) managed four hits in the nightcap with Vanata hitting two of them.

Sophomore right-hander Chance Hitchcock (5-4) gave up seven runs (two earned) on nine hits in a complete game. He walked two and struck out five. Andrew Click (5-1) allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

The Eagles will look to salvage the final game of the series on Saturday (April 28) at 1 p.m.
