Eagles Advance To 16th NCAA Tournament In Program History

The Ashland University baseball team qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament it was announced on a selection show on NCAA.com Sunday (May 13) night.

The Eagles (32-20) are the No. 6 seed in the Midwest Regional, which will begin Thursday (May 17) in Springfield, Ill.

It is the 16th NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in program history and the 15th under head coach John Schaly. The Eagles are returning to the postseason for the third in the last four seasons. The Eagles were the regional runners-up in 2015 and went 2-2 in the tournament in 2016. Ashland is looking to return to the Division II World Series for the first time since 2008.

The Eagles will play No. 3 seed Northwood in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday. The Eagles are 1-4 against the Timberwolves this season, including a 5-1 defeat in the GLIAC Tournament on Saturday. Northwood was the top seed in the Midwest Region last year and was the runner-up. 

The Eagles have rebounded exceptionally from a down season in 2017 to win 32 games this year. Ashland won its first two games in the GLIAC Tournament via shutouts, going 2-2 in the conference tournament.

Illinois Springfield earned the top seed and the right to host the Midwest Regional. It is the Prairie Stars' first NCAA Tournament appearance.
