Mittermaier, Barleben Add To All-Region Selections

Ashland University senior outfielder Connor Barleben and sophomore designated hitter Carson Mittermaier were each selected to the All-Midwest Region second team by the American Baseball Coaches Association the organization announced on Wednesday (May 22).

Mittermaier has now been named a second team all-region standout by the ABCA, NCBWA and D2CCA while Barleben has earned second team citations from the ABCA and D2CCA.

Barleben led the GLIAC in slugging percentage (.677) and RBI (58) and tied for the league lead with 12 home runs. He batted .365 (69-for-189) on the season with a .443 on-base percentage with both marks ranking in the top 10 in the conference. Barleben was also third in the GLIAC with 12 doubles.

He hit three home runs and drove in seven runs in a game against West Liberty on April 5, winning GLIAC Player of the Week honors.

Barleben closed the season by hitting .444 (24-for-54) with 12 extra-base hits and 19 RBI in his last 13 games. He had multiple hits in each of Ashland's three games at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Springfield, Ill.

Mittermaier ranked sixth in the GLIAC in batting average and fifth in on-base percentage, slashing .381/.466/.540 on the season, going 67-for-176 at the plate. He finished with 18 extra-base hits and was sixth in the GLIAC with 50 RBI.

He finished the season riding a six-game hitting streak and had six RBI in that stretch. Mittermaier stole six bases on the year.

The Eagles (33-22) advanced to their third NCAA Midwest Regional in the last four seasons and went 1-2 at the tournament. The program improved its win total by 13 from the 2017 season. It was the 21st season under head coach John Schaly.
