Brandyn Sittinger had quite the 24th birthday on Wednesday (June 6).

The former Ashland University All-American right-handed pitcher began the day with the news that he was named to the East Division All-Star team for the 2018 Midwest League All-Star Game, June 19 in Lansing, Mich.

Sittinger then celebrated his birthday and his all-star selection on Wednesday night with a three-inning save and five strikeouts in the Class A West Michigan Whitecaps' 7-1 home win over the Great Lakes Loons.

In his third minor-league season after being drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 17th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft, Sittinger is 2-0 with a save and a 5.00 earned-run average for the Whitecaps so far in 2018. In 12 relief outings and 27 innings, Sittinger has struck out 36 batters, and has recorded at least five whiffs in four appearances.

Sittinger was drafted by the Tigers following a standout stint with Ashland after his transfer from NCAA Division I Marshall. For the Eagles in 2016, he was 11-0 with a 2.23 ERA in 14 appearances (13 starts). In 88 2/3 innings, he struck out 131 and allowed 65 hits, 27 runs (22 earned) and 40 walks.

Following his junior season, Sittinger racked up postseason honors, including three All-American awards, three Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year laurels and three first-team All-Midwest Region spots. In addition, he was a finalist for the 2016 Brett Tomko Award (D2 Baseball News national Pitcher of the Year), was the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, earned spots on the All-Midwest Region and All-GLIAC Tournament teams, garnered a GLIAC Commissioner's Award and was named first-team All-GLIAC, GLIAC South Division Pitcher of the Week three times and CoSIDA Academic All-District.

In two seasons at Ashland, Sittinger led the GLIAC in strikeouts twice.
