Walk-Off Lifts Eagles To Sweep of Gannon

The Ashland University baseball team finished off a three-game series sweep over Gannon with two wins on Saturday (March 16) afternoon at Donges Field, beating the Knights, 8-3 and 3-2.

The Eagles (12-3), ranked No. 25 in the NCBWA poll, won Game 2 in walk-off fashion as junior Carson Mittermaier delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single to center field that scored junior Michael Rogers with the winning run.

The Eagles had just four hits in the second game, but got solid pitching from sophomore starter Perry Bewley and senior reliever Chris Slavik, who earned the win with three innings of one-run relief.

Sophomore Austin Eifrid gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI groundout before Gannon tied it with a run in the fourth.

Sophomore Logan Stoldt delivered a sac fly in the sixth to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead, but the Knights tied it with an RBI double in the seventh, setting up Mittermaier's heroics.

In Game 1, the Eagles scored twice each in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings and out-hit the Knights, 10-5.

Junior Chance Hitchcock earned the win, tossing a complete game and allowing just two earned runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles had a 2-0 lead going into the third and senior Matt Littrell ripped a two-run double to make it 4-0 in the third.

Ashland added two more in the fourth and Eifrid's two-run single in the sixth stretched Ashland's lead to 8-2.

Saturday's doubleheader started a 13-game homestand for the Eagles, which will continue on Tuesday (March 19) at 3 p.m. against Walsh.
