Eagles Remain On Top of Midwest Region Rankings

The Ashland University baseball team remained at the top of the NCAA Division II Midwest Region rankings released on Wednesday (May 8) afternoon.

This the final release of the region rankings before the NCAA Tournament field is announced Sunday (May 12) at 10 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.

The top eight teams in the region will qualify for the NCAA Midwest Regional tournament with automatic bids going to the tournament champions of the GLIAC, Great Lakes Valley Conference and Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

The regional tournament will be split into two sites this year with the top two teams the place bids earning the right to host. That will be held May 16-18. The winners of each four-team regional will meet for a three-game series in the super regional round May 24-25.

The Eagles (37-10) went 3-1 last week at Purdue Northwest in the final series of the regular season.

They won their fifth GLIAC regular season title and earned the No. 1 seed in this week's GLIAC Tournament in Traverse City, Mich.

Ashland is looking for its 17th NCAA Tournament berth in program history and the 16th under head coach John Schaly, who is in his 22nd season.

The Eagles will play No. 6-seed Saginaw Valley in the opening round of the conference tournament on Thursday (May 9) at 2:30 p.m. at Wuerfel Park. Ashland's only GLIAC Tournament title came in 2013.
