The Ashland University esports program placed its Overwatch team in third place and its League of Legends squad in fourth at the Ohio Collegiate Esports Series Invitational at the University of Akron in a tournament that ran Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 28-29).
The competition served as the playoffs for both game titles after a round-robin regular season. The LoL team was 4-1 overall in league play while the Overwatch team went 3-1. The only losses for each team in the regular season came against Miami University.
Overwatch defeated Kent State, 3-1, on Monday to stay in the winner's bracket before falling to top-seeded Miami, 3-1, in the first match on Day 2. The Eagles were the only team to take a game off the Redhawks, who eventually went on to win the title. Ashland was eliminated with a 3-1 loss to the University of Akron.
In League of Legends, the Eagles picked up a 2-0 win over Akron to open tournament play, but fell to Miami, 2-0, in the next round. The Eagles finished the tournament with a 2-0 win over Cleveland State and a narrow 2-1 defeat to Kent State.
"I'm proud of our teams' progress this season," said head esports coach Josh Buchanan. "Our results this week are a testament to how invested our student-athletes are in each other's growth and development."
