Ashland University's football team lost Saturday afternoon (Nov. 8) at Michigan Tech, 28-12, to end the regular season at 8-2 overall and in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The loss snaps the 22nd-ranked Eagles' six-game winning streak. The Huskies, ranked 20th in the country, improve to 8-1 overall and in the GLIAC with the win.
Ashland got on the board first with 2:34 left in the first quarter on a seven-yard touchdown pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Travis Tarnowski to senior wide receiver Dan Piko. The extra point was blocked, however, leaving the Eagles ahead, 6-0.
Michigan Tech's Zack Skeels then scored a pair of one-yard touchdown runs in the second quarter, with 10:17 to go and 1:49 left until halftime. The Huskies went into halftime ahead by a 14-6 margin.
To start the third quarter, the Eagles used an eight-play, 66-yard drive to make it a 14-12 contest. Senior tailback Anthony Taylor scored on a one-yard touchdown run, but the two-point conversion pass for the tie failed.
The Huskies then pulled away to finish off the victory – first with a four-yard touchdown run by Charlie Leffingwell with 6:37 left in the third quarter, then with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Scarlett to Ian Wienke.
Piko caught eight passes for 130 yards and a touchdown, while Taylor ran 18 times for 70 yards and a score. Tarnowski was 17-for-32 for 250 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Defensively, senior linebacker Cody Bloom had 13 total tackles, and senior defensive end Chase Hoobler had five total tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss.
Ashland has a Week 11 bye week, so it will wait for other results from next week in terms of a possible postseason appearance. The Eagles were seventh in the region coming into Saturday's game, and the top six teams in each region go to the playoffs.
