Following a 48-0 win over Mercyhurst in the 2016 opener on Thursday (Sept. 1) at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field, Ashland University's football team has moved up one spot to No. 5 in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches' Poll, released on Monday (Sept. 5) night.

This marks the first time the Eagles have been in the top five of the AFCA poll since the end of the 2015 season, when the program achieved an all-time best ranking of third in consecutive weeks. Ashland was ranked in the top five four times last season, and this is the eighth time the program has been in the top five of the AFCA poll (since 2000).

Ashland is one of three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams in the top seven in this week's poll, along with Grand Valley State (No. 3) and Ferris State (No. 7).

The Eagles will play host to another 1-0 GLIAC team, Wayne State, on Saturday (Sept. 10) at 7 p.m. The game will be a part of Bill Royce Recognition Weekend for the former AU All-American defensive end, who will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December.
