Ashland University junior tight end Adam Shaheen is one of 42 nationwide nominees for the 2016 Harlon Hill Trophy, awarded to the NCAA Division II football Player of the Year.

Shaheen finished the 2016 season with 57 catches for 867 yards and a school-record/D-II tight end single-season record 16 touchdown receptions. He leads all Division II tight ends in all three categories, and continues to lead all tight ends at all NCAA levels in TD grabs.

Also this fall, Shaheen has earned first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Academic All-District honors in NCAA Division II, District 4 from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). On Oct. 10, he became the first tight end in GLIAC history to win GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Shaheen is the only tight end among this year's nominees. No tight end has won the award since its inception in 1986, and only two players who weren't a quarterback or running back have won the award.

Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors at the 171 NCAA Division II football-playing institutions. The 42 initial candidates will be placed on regional ballots, and the top two players from each of the four NCAA regions will advance to the national ballot when regional voting concludes on Nov. 28.

The winner of the 2016 award will be announced on Dec. 16 via a webcast, and the winner will be honored at a luncheon on the University of North Alabama campus on Jan. 6, 2017.
