Three Ashland University football players – junior tight end Adam Shaheen, senior right guard Zachary Douglass and junior quarterback Travis Tarnowski – have earned spots on the 2016 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Super Region Four team.
Both Shaheen and Douglass are members of the super region's first team. Shaheen, who recently announced he was forgoing his senior season to enter the 2017 National Football League draft, caught 57 passes for 867 yards and a school-record/Division II tight end single-season record 16 touchdowns in 2016.
The Don Hansen honor adds to the growing list of junior-season laurels for Shaheen, which include:
- First-team NCAA Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-America
- First-team American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches' All-America
- D2CCA first-team All-Super Region 4
- College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) first-team Academic All-America
- CoSIDA first-team Academic All-District
- All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first-team
- Harlon Hill Trophy (D-II Player of the Year) nominee
- First tight end in GLIAC history to win the conference's Offensive Player of the Week award (Oct. 10)
Douglass finished his senior campaign grading out at 90 percent blocking with 95 knockdowns. Earlier this offseason, he was named second-team AFCA All-America, second-team D2CCA All-Super Region 4 and first-team All-GLIAC.
Shaheen and Douglass advance to a national ballot, from which the 2016 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named later in January.
Tarnowski earned third-team all-super region honors. He became AU's all-time leader in passing touchdowns in 2016, completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 2,989 yards, 34 touchdowns and six interceptions, and landed on the All-GLIAC second team.
