The football game on Saturday (Sept. 9) at 7 p.m. at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field, between #RV Ashland University (0-1) and #RV Ohio Dominican (0-1), is an important one.
There also will be plenty of festivities surrounding what Eagle head coach Lee Owens has dubbed the "Division II Battle of Ohio," both at halftime and in pre-game.
During the 20-minute halftime, Ashland College's 1967 football team will be honored. It was program's second undefeated team, and head coach Dr. Fred Martinelli's first, at 8-0-1. Ashland, which ended the season 12th in the country in the NAIA poll, outscored its opponents 297-78, and the Eagle defense pitched three shutouts. Quarterback Mike Healy was the first Ashland player to throw for 20 touchdown passes in a season. Linebacker Len Pettigrew later was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1971, and played in the World Football League for the Philadelphia Bell in 1974-75.

Prior to Saturday night's kickoff, Ashland's athletic department will honor Hall of Fame head coaches John Schaly and Sheilah Gulas.
Schaly will be inducted into the 2018 class of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame on Jan. 5 during the ABCA Convention at the J.W. Marriott in Indianapolis, Ind. Schaly is 726-386-4 (.652) with five GLIAC championships and 14 NCAA Division II postseason appearances entering his 21st season guiding the Eagle baseball team.
Gulas will enter the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Hall of Fame as part of the 2017 class on Dec. 8 at the NFCA Convention in Las Vegas, Nev. Gulas recently retired after 31 seasons as a collegiate head softball coach, including the last 21 at Ashland, where she was 723-365-1 (.664) with four GLIAC titles and 12 Division II postseason berths.
Dr. Campo To Join Students Again In 2017
As has been tradition since he came to campus, Ashland President Dr. Carlos Campo will be in the student section during the second quarter of each home football game in 2017.
Ashland's Active Division II Career Leaders
Heading into Week 2, senior quarterback Travis Tarnowski is first in NCAA Division II among active players in career touchdown passes (83) and passing yards per attempt (8.19), second in career passing yards (8,480) and career total offense yards per play (7.70), sixth in career completion percentage (61.9), eighth in career passing efficiency (152.82) and 10th in career total offense yards per game (265.8).
Senior kicker Aidan Simenc is third in D-II in active career field-goal percentage (84.4) and tied for sixth in active career extra points made (126).
Meder, Shaheen Start 2017 Seasons Sunday
Week 1 of the 2017 National Football League season starts on Thursday (Sept. 7), and former Ashland University All-Americans Jamie Meder and Adam Shaheen will begin their campaigns on Sunday (Sept. 10) at 1 p.m.
Meder, in his fourth NFL season, is listed atop the Cleveland Browns' depth chart at defensive tackle for Sunday's home game with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Shaheen, a rookie tight end, is No. 3 on the Chicago Bears' depth chart for their home game vs. the Atlanta Falcons.
