LINK – WEEK 7 ASHLAND UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS
Four teams have pulled away and ascended to the top of the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football standings.
All four of those teams will play in the top two games of the Week 8 GLIAC schedule on "Showdown Saturday," Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. – Ashland (6-1 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) at Tiffin (5-2, 4-1) and Grand Valley State (6-1, 5-0) at Ferris State (5-1, 4-1).
The 16th-ranked Eagles will take a six-game winning streak to Frost-Kalnow Stadium, while the Dragons have won five of their last six games. In the Anchor-Bone Classic, the No. 7-ranked Lakers have won six straight coming in, while the No. 15-ranked Bulldogs are 3-0 at home in 2017.
These games also will have NCAA Division II postseason implications, as the first set of regional rankings will be revealed on Oct. 23.
Eagle "D" Showing No Signs Of Slowing Down
Thanks to a second shutout in 2017, Ashland's defense has given up 13 points in the last three games, and 16 in the last four games. The last time the Eagles yielded no more than 16 points in a four-game stretch was Oct. 16-Nov. 6, 1993 (14).
On Saturday (Oct. 14) afternoon against Michigan Tech, Ashland's "D" allowed just 166 total yards – its best showing since Nov. 5, 2016 at home vs. Walsh (86). The Eagles have given up less than 300 yards of offense to each of their last five opponents.
Ashland is second in the GLIAC in scoring defense (11.0 ppg.) and tied for first in interceptions (eight), with half of those picks coming on Saturday vs. the Huskies.
No Tricks, Just Treats For Green
Kamaron Green likes when the calendar flips to October.
The junior wide receiver has caught 10 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns in two October games in 2017, and all three of those TD grabs came on Saturday against Tech. Last season, in five October contests, Green caught 15 passes for 314 yards and three scores.
Shaheen Starts In Bears OT Win, Meder Sees Time In Browns Loss
Former Ashland University All-Americans Adam Shaheen and Jamie Meder both played in Week 6 of their respective 2017 National Football League seasons on Sunday (Oct. 15) afternoon.
Shaheen, a rookie tight end, started in a two-tight-end set in a 27-24 overtime win for the Chicago Bears at the Baltimore Ravens. In a 33-17 loss at the Houston Texans, Meder played along the Cleveland Browns defensive line in a reserve role and had two solo tackles.

Senior quarterback Travis Tarnowski has at least 20 touchdown passes in a season for the third time in his Eagle career. He is the first Ashland quarterback to accomplish the feat…Senior kicker Aidan Simenc has hit a career-long field goal in back-to-back games (42 yards against Tech), and has tied the program record for career extra points made (155), set by Gregg Berkshire…Ashland has outscored opponents 65-9 in the first quarter and 127-31 in the second quarter this season…The Eagles have rushed for 589 yards in the last three games after netting 494 in the first four...With a 3-for-3 showing on fourth down on Homecoming, Ashland has converted 8-of-9 fourth-down conversions this season.
