Ashland University senior quarterback Travis Tarnowski is one of 34 NCAA Division II football players nominated for the Harlon Hill Trophy, the D-II Player of the Year award, as announced on Monday (Nov. 20) morning.

One of the top quarterbacks in Division II, Tarnowski has completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 2,756 yards, 29 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also has rushed for 128 yards and a score, and has a 37.0-yard punting average with nine boots placed inside the 20-yard line.

Among D-II quarterbacks this season, through the first round of the playoffs, Tarnowski is tied for the third-fewest interceptions thrown, and is tied for eighth in touchdown passes.

Tarnowski is the third Eagle to be nominated for the Harlon Hill twice, following fellow quarterback Billy Cundiff (2008-09) and College Football Hall of Fame defensive end Bill Royce (1992-93).

Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors at the 169 NCAA Division II football-playing institutions. The 34 initial candidates will be placed on regional ballots, and the top two players from each of the four NCAA regions will advance to the national ballot when regional voting concludes on Nov. 27.

The 2017 Harlon Hill Trophy winner will be announced on Dec. 15, and will be presented with the award at a luncheon at the University of North Alabama on Jan. 5.

Ashland "D" Stays In The Backfield

The Eagle defense collected three sacks and 11 tackles for loss in the win on Saturday (Nov. 18) at home vs. Northwest Missouri State.

In the last three games, Ashland's "D" has racked up 12 sacks and 27 TFLs – its best three-game stretch since getting 32 stops behind the line from Oct. 15-29, 2016.

Eagles Heading Into Near-Uncharted Territory

Not only has Ashland tied the school record for wins in a season with 11 going into its Super Region Three semifinal on Saturday (Nov. 25) at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field vs. Harding, it also will tie the program mark for games played in a season at 13 (2008).

This also will be the fourth time in the near 100 years of Ashland football that the Eagles will play four straight home games in a single campaign. In 1929 and 1948, then-Ashland College played its final four games of both seasons at Redwood Stadium, and in 1954, four consecutive home games were split between Redwood and Myers Field.

Shaheen, Meder Take Part In NFL Week 11

On Sunday (Nov. 19) afternoon, former Ashland University All-Americans Adam Shaheen and Jamie Meder each played in Week 11 of the 2017 National Football League season.

Shaheen, a tight end for the Chicago Bears, started and caught four passes for 41 yards and a touchdown in a 27-24 home loss to the Detroit Lions. Meder, a defensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns, played and was injured in the first quarter and did not return.
