Tarnowski Named Finalist For Greater Cleveland Sports Award

Ashland University senior quarterback Travis Tarnowski has been named a finalist in the Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year category for the 18th Greater Cleveland Sports Awards, Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio.

In helping lead the Eagles to an 11-2 record, a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and a spot in the NCAA Division II postseason, Tarnowski threw for 3,044 yards and 31 touchdowns to just five interceptions in 2017, and completed 59 percent of his passes. He threw for two or more touchdowns in a game 10 times this fall, rushed for 156 yards and a score, and averaged 36.9 yards on 36 punts.

Tarnowski is Ashland's all-time leader in passing yards (11,321), passing touchdowns (111), total offense yards (11,741) and wins by a starting quarterback (38).

Following his senior season, Tarnowski was named first-team American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America, second-team Associated Press and Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-America, D2CCA Super Region 3 Offensive Player of the Year, GLIAC Player of the Year, first-team All-GLIAC and a Harlon Hill Trophy (Division II Player of the Year) nominee.

Other finalists for the Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year award are Kent State's Reggie Jagers III (track and field), the University of Mount Union football team and The Ohio State University's Denzel Ward (football).

Finalists for the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards were selected by local sports and media outlets who chose outstanding athletes from Northeast Ohio's following counties – Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark and Summit. Tarnowski is from Broadview Heights, Ohio.

Other award categories include Male and Female High School Athlete of the Year, Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year and Professional Athlete of the Year. The finalists for the latter award category are LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Corey Kluber and Jose Ramirez of the Cleveland Indians and Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns.
