The 2017 National Football League seasons for former Ashland University All-Americans Adam Shaheen and Jamie Meder have come to an end.
Shaheen, a rookie tight end for the Chicago Bears, finished his first professional campaign with 12 catches for 127 yards and three touchdowns, despite missing the final three games due to injury. Shaheen played in 13 games and started seven, and caught his first NFL touchdown pass in a 23-17 home overtime win in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Shaheen was drafted in the second round (No. 45 overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Bears. He had a record-setting junior season at Ashland in 2016, one in which he caught a school-record and NCAA Division II single-season tight end-record 16 touchdown passes. He grabbed a school tight end-record 70 passes as a sophomore in 2015.
After starting just two seasons for the Eagles, Shaheen is No. 5 all-time in program history with 129 career catches, No. 10 in career receiving yards with 1,755 and was two receiving touchdowns away from tying the school's all-time record in that category.
Meder, a fourth-year defensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns, played in the first 10 games of 2017 (started one) prior to being placed on injured reserve on Nov. 21. This season, Meder had 13 total tackles (eight solo).
Meder re-signed with the Browns on March 28. In his first season as an NFL starter at defensive end in 2016, Meder finished with 48 total tackles (26 solo) and one sack. He earned Week 16 AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors following a blocked field goal which helped Cleveland to its only win of the season on Dec. 24 at home against the San Diego Chargers.
His collegiate career totals include 247 total tackles (96 solo), 35 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and three forced fumbles.
