Ashland University senior center Dominic Giunta has capped a quite successful 2017 season by earning one of 12 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner's Awards for the fall 2017 athletic campaign, as announced by the GLIAC on Friday (Jan. 26) morning.

This past season, Giunta, a three-year starter, was the anchor of an Eagle offensive line which allowed Ashland to average 33.4 points and 407.8 yards of offense per game in 2017. This season, he graded out at 88 percent blocking with 108 knockdowns. In 2,447 career plays as an Eagle, Giunta had 292 knockdowns and allowed just one sack.

Giunta graduated in December with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.70 as a Physics/Mathematics double major.

In addition to the Commissioner's Award, Giunta's other senior-season honors include first-team Associated Press and Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) first-team All-America, D2CCA and Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Super Region Three first team, GLIAC Offensive Lineman of the Year, first-team All-GLIAC and GLIAC All-Academic Excellence.

Since the fall of 2007, Ashland student-athletes have earned 36 GLIAC Commissioner's Awards. Giunta gives the Eagle football program six such honors.

The GLIAC Commissioner's Awards are presented after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play. All grade-point averages are based on a 4.0 scale.
