The 2018 Ashland University spring football season came to an end on Saturday (April 21) night, as, in the annual Purple and Gold Spring Game at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field, Gold topped Purple, 12-0.

"It was great to get back on the field," said Gold safety Nick Powers. "We have a lot of spots to fill, and we practiced about three times a week, and the defense showed up and played great.

"I'm happy with how the spring ended."

All of Saturday's points came in the second "quarter," which ended up being a 22-plus-minute period. Quarterback Billy Bahl, a transfer from NCAA Division I Miami (Ohio) with a year of remaining eligibility, threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Christopher Boykin, then running back Keishaun Sims ran into the end zone from four yards out to end the game.

Bahl was named the Gridiron Club Offensive Player of the Game after completing 8-of-17 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown.

"I've been here for about two months, and the guys have been super welcoming coming in," Bahl said. "I think, overall, the way we've meshed together, we've worked hard, and that's all we can really do right now. As long as we keep working, I know we'll do great things next year.

"It's tough coming in and trying to learn a new offense. The other quarterbacks have helped me so much. That's the biggest thing. We have great camaraderie in the quarterback room."

The Gridiron Club Defensive Player of the Game was Gold defensive lineman Curtis Roupe, who led all players with five solo tackles. Gold safety Brady Cotsmire had the game's lone interception.

Gold also received 37 yards and a score on nine carries from Sims, two catches for 95 yards from wide receiver Austin Jasinski, and two grabs for 62 yards from Boykin.

For Purple, quarterback John Davies was 11-for-24 for 111 yards, and running back Kumar Collins gained 24 yards on four carries.
