Kyohei Kosaka's American football coaching journey has taken him nearly 7,000 miles from Tokyo, Japan, to Ashland, Ohio.

The next step in "Coach K's" coaching journey will be just less than 60 miles away, as he will join the National Football League's Cleveland Browns this summer as an unpaid assistant coach.

"I knew that they had a program that they'll offer a coaching opportunity for minorities," Kosaka said. "I did write a letter to all 32 teams' head coaches, with my resume and PowerPoint. Fortunately, I got a call from the Browns. They were interested in me, and they gave me an opportunity to learn something up there.

"I'll basically be an assistant to an assistant coach. I'll basically be one of their staff, like I was the first year I was here."

With the Browns, Coach K will be on the field, and helping in practices and meetings. He will be with the team from mid-May until training camp for the Eagles begins in August, including Cleveland's mini-camp and OTAs.

Kosaka has completed two seasons as a coach on the Ashland University football staff – as an observer in 2016 and as a defensive graduate assistant coach in 2017.

"I've learned a lot about defense, learned about coaching football," Kosaka said. "Coach (Tim) Rose gave me a lot of opportunities. I appreciate that. That's the most important part.

"I get to be involved in a lot more coaching now. This spring, coach Rose gave me the opportunity to coach defensive ends and linebackers. Running meetings, trying to set up all the drills for them, making decisions – all those things are very new. That is interesting. That is fun, but it's a lot of responsibility."

Prior to coming to the United States, he was an assistant coach from 2013-15 with the Tokyo Gas Creators, one of the teams in Japan's top football league, the X-League.

Coach K doesn't know where his time with the Browns will lead, but he is looking forward to the experience.

"It's not that easy to get a job in the NFL. I understand that," said Kosaka. "It's an opportunity for me to learn, to show what I can do, introduce myself, and at the same time, have fun."
