Armstrong, in conjunction with its Avenge Hunger Month, will have a food drive at Ashland University's Homecoming football game, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field vs. Northwood.
Members of Ashland University and surrounding communities are invited to bring non-perishable food items outside the ticket gates at the football stadium. A free ticket for the Homecoming contest will be given to those in the general public who have food items to provide, while AU students will be put into a drawing for a 7-inch tablet – one entry per food item dropped off.
According to Armstrong, items most requested by local food banks and soup kitchens are peanut butter, low sugar/whole grain cereal, canned tuna/salmon/chicken, granola/breakfast bars, fruit/vegetable juice, canned beans/soup/stew/chili, low-sodium canned vegetables, pasta/rice, pet food, cooking oils, canned fruit in water and applesauce in plastic jars.
"Armstrong, as a whole company, we have our initiative, Breaking Bread, and that is something we do daily," said Sandy Burkholder, Armstrong Office Manager/Community Marketing Manager. "We support the food banks in our communities that way. We do here, and we also do Hillsdale Cares, and that helps support the school system there.
"This September is Hunger Action Month nationwide, so we wanted a drive to help the community."
Hunger Action Month is a month where people all over America stand together with Feeding America and the nationwide network of food banks to fight hunger. Armstrong's Avenge Hunger Month helps create an awareness for the need, and provide resources to help reduce the need, and is an extension of the company's Breaking Break initiative, which provides resources for food pantries, soup kitchens and other social services.
