Ashland University's football team gathered several 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors on Tuesday (Nov. 13) afternoon, with senior defensive end James Prater Jr. and redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Brenner leading the way.
Prater Jr. is the 2018 GLIAC Defensive Lineman of the Year, and Brenner is the 2018 GLIAC Freshman of the Year. Prater Jr. joins former Cleveland Brown Jamie Meder (2012-13) as Ashland's GLIAC Defensive Lineman of the Year winners, and Brenner joins Meder (2010) and Travis Tarnowski (2014) as Eagle GLIAC Freshman of the Year recipients.
In 2018, Prater Jr. was second in the GLIAC in sacks (9½) and tied for third in tackles for loss (15), and finished runner-up on the team with 65 total tackles (27 solo). He also broke up four passes.
Prater Jr. is Ashland's all-time leader in tackles for loss (46), and is tied for ninth all-time on the Eagles' sack list (22½). In his final two seasons alone, Prater Jr. racked up 19½ sacks, 38½ tackles for loss, 128 total stops and 12 pass breakups.
Starting seven games at quarterback, Brenner had a 5-2 record, and led the GLIAC in completion percentage at 61.3. He threw for 1,225 yards, five touchdowns and a GLIAC-starting-QB-low two interceptions.
As a punter, Brenner averaged a GLIAC-best 41.3 yards per punt, and he was third on the team in both rushing yards (241) and rushing touchdowns (tied, three).
Four Eagles were named first-team all-conference on Tuesday – senior tailback Andrew Vaughn, Prater Jr., senior safety Isaiah Stiverson and junior inside linebacker Clay Shreve. Vaughn rushed for 806 yards and six touchdowns, and caught 22 passes for 156 yards and a score; Stiverson posted 38 total tackles (22 solo), two tackles for loss, two interceptions, two pass breakups and a forced fumble; and Shreve led Ashland with 76 total tackles (35 solo), while adding six sacks, 6½ tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.
Ashland second-teamers were senior wide receiver Kamaron Green (44 catches, 476 yards, two touchdowns; 27.4-yard kickoff return average), junior stud Tristan Reichelderfer (58 total tackles, 4½ sacks, 6½ tackles for loss, two pass breakups, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble), junior safety Nick Powers (44 total tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss, three interceptions, two pass breakups, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble), sophomore inside linebacker Ryan Corkrean (63 total tackles, 1½ sacks, 6½ tackles for loss, three pass breakups, one fumble recovery) and sophomore kicker Satchel Denton (30-for-30 extra points, 13-of-15 field goals).
Eagles landing honorable mention were sophomore cornerback Colton Paul (35 total tackles, one tackle for loss, five pass breakups, one forced fumble), sophomore wide receiver Logan Bolin (29 catches, 394 yards, three touchdowns), Brenner, junior left tackle Ryan Maguire, senior nose tackle Brandon May (21 total tackles, 1½ sacks, 1½ tackles for loss, one pass breakup) and senior long snapper Travis Downing.
