Senior long snapper Travis Downing and senior safety Isaiah Stiverson combined on Tuesday (Dec. 11) afternoon for a feat not accomplished on Ashland University's football team in 23 years.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday that both Downing and Stiverson had earned 2018 NCAA Division II second-team Academic All-America status. It is the first time since 1995 that the Eagle football program has had a pair of Academic All-Americas in the same year (Chad DiFranco and Jeff Mowrey).
Downing finished his fourth season as Ashland's snapper in 2018, and has a 3.92 cumulative grade-point average in Sport Management. Earlier this season, he earned CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorable mention, and was Ashland's nominee for the National Football Foundation's (NFF) Campbell Trophy and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team.
Stiverson was a starting safety for the Eagles, posting 38 total tackles, two tackles for loss, two interceptions, two pass breakups and a forced fumble. He has a 3.70 cumulative GPA in Marketing, and was named CoSIDA Academic All-District and first-team All-GLIAC in 2018.
Downing and Stiverson are the 17th and 18th Academic All-Americans in Ashland football history, all since 1972.
