In 2007, Matt LaFleur was the offensive coordinator for Ashland University's football team.
In 2019, LaFleur will be in his first season as head coach of the National Football League's Green Bay Packers.
As officially announced by the Packers on Tuesday (Jan. 8) night, LaFleur completes a football coaching ascension which made a stop in Ashland 12 years ago. In his only season at Ashland, on the staff of head coach Lee Owens, the Eagles scored a then-program-record 440 points in 10 games (previous record was 354 in 1972), averaged 528.2 yards of total offense, and helped AU to an NCAA Division II postseason appearance.
Following his season at Ashland, LaFleur, 39, has worked his way up the coaching ladder, going from the Houston Texans (offensive assistant, 2008-09) to the Washington Redskins (quarterbacks coach, 2010-13), Notre Dame (quarterbacks coach, 2014), Atlanta Falcons (quarterbacks coach, 2015-16), Los Angeles Rams (offensive coordinator, 2017) and Tennessee Titans (offensive coordinator, 2018).
Prior to coming to Ashland, LaFleur worked his way around the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference – serving as an offensive assistant at his alma mater, Saginaw Valley State, in 2003; a graduate assistant at Central Michigan in 2004-05, and the quarterbacks/wide receivers coach at Northern Michigan in 2006.
LaFleur becomes the 15th head coach in the history of the Packers franchise, one that dates back to 1921.
