On Tuesday (July 16) morning, Ashland University senior inside linebacker Clay Shreve was named a nominee for the 2019 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team, an annual award given to college football players for the impact they make off the field.

In 2018, Shreve was a second-team all-region selection by the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA), and earned first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference laurels for the second year in a row. Last fall, Shreve led Ashland in total tackles with 76, while adding 6½ tackles for loss, six sacks and a fumble recovery.

Shreve sports a cumulative grade-point average of 3.96 as a Middle Childhood Education major, with concentrations in Math and Social Studies, through the 2019 spring semester, and his community service includes, but is not limited to, mission trips to the Dominican Republic, work with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and the Stark County Exceptional Olympics.

This marks the third time in the last four years that an Eagle football player has been a Good Works Team nominee. Zach Bernhard earned a spot on the Good Works Team in 2016, and Travis Downing was a nominee in 2018.

Shreve is one of 137 nominees from across the country. The final roster of 23 award recipients will be announced on Sept. 12, bringing together 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and one honorary head coach.

Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team continues to be one of the most coveted community service awards in college football. To be considered for a spot on the team, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group, while maintaining a strong academic standing.
