Coming off its best showing to date at an Ashland University football game at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field, Armstrong Cable once again will collect non-perishable canned food items for Associated Charities at the Eagles' home game vs. Ferris State on Saturday (Sept. 21) at 7 p.m.
As part of its Avenge Hunger campaign, Armstrong collected 185 food items and $35 in cash at Ashland's 2019 opener at home vs. Indianapolis on Sept. 5.
"We were excited about the support, as this was the best we've done at an AU football game yet," said Armstrong's Sandy Burkholder.
Once again for the game against the Bulldogs, fans who do not have a ticket can bring food items for a general admission ticket to that game (one can / general admission ticket per person), and fans who already have purchased tickets also are encouraged to bring food items, as well.
Armstrong also collects food at its office at 1215 Claremont Ave., and notes that items most requested are – peanut butter, low sugar whole grain cereal, canned tuna, canned salmon, canned chicken, granola or breakfast bars, fruit or vegetable juice, canned beans, soup, stew, chili; low sodium canned vegetables, pasta and rice, pet food, cooking oils (olive and canola), applesauce in plastic jars, and canned fruit in water.
September is Hunger Action Month, a national focus on helping to fight hunger and food insecurity. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to food for an active, healthy life.
Armstrong Cable annually supports Hunter Action Month with its Breaking Bread initiative – a program designed to feed the hungry in the communities Armstrong lives in, works in and provides service.
Ashland (1-1) will open 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at home on Saturday night against No. 2-ranked Ferris State (2-0).
